Just like English language, Japanese language also consists of there writing methods: hiragana, katakana & kanji. Each method has its own purpose and way. 

  1. Hiragana: The most used script in Japanese Language is Hiragana. It has 48 characters, each one with a curved shape. Not like English language where few characters represent syllables, in Japanese Language each character represents it syllable. 
  2. Katakana: katakana also has 48 characters which has a same sound as hiragana. In Japanese language katakana is used for foreign loanwords – terms from other languages and technical terms. 
  3. Kanji: In order to frame sentences, kanji is used along with hiragana and katakana. Kanji is considered to be the modified version of Chinese characters and each kanji depicts whole words, ideas and concepts. 

Learning Japanese characters can be a bit challenging. Kanji consists of 50,000 characters out of which one should know 2000 characters to be fluent in kanji. Along, with this one should know about the 5000 Japanese vocabulary words to be expert in Japanese Language. 

 Here are some tips and tricks to learn Japanese Vocabulary effectively:

  1. Flashcards: Download and use apps like Anki and Quizlet, to help you in a long term or take a pen and paper and create your own flashcards. Write words on one side and meaning on the other side and then regularly practice yourself. 
  2. Learning: Make reading as your habit. Try to read more and more comics or newspaper, it helps you more on understanding and memorizing words. 
  3. Mnemonics: Say a word and draft its mental image for better learning. 
  4. Practice with others: Get yourself a tutor or a language partner and try to speak with him/her in Japanese Language or join some discussion groups. 
  5. Multimedia: Try to watch more and more movies or tv shows in Japanese Language and if required switch on the subtitle option. 
  6. Write Regularly: Keep a diary and write it everyday in Japanese Language, it helps you more to be fluent.
